Why Are My Pictures Blurry When Sent?

Last updated: September 17, 2026

You took a sharp photo, sent it, and the person on the other end got a smudged thumbnail. That is compression working exactly as the apps designed it. Here is why it happens, how to avoid it, and what to do about pictures that already arrived blurry.

The short answer

Most messaging apps shrink and re-encode photos before sending them, to save bandwidth and storage on both ends. Your original stays sharp on your device; what travels is a smaller, lower-quality copy. And compression compounds: every app, upload and re-save along the way applies its own pass, so a photo forwarded through three chats arrives noticeably worse than one sent directly.

The blur you see is information that was discarded on purpose. The sections below cover how to stop that from happening — and how to reconstruct what survived when it already did.

What each app does to your photos

Apps differ in how aggressively they compress and what options they give you. The reliable patterns as of 2026:

AppTypical behaviourBetter way to send
SMS / MMSPhotos are downscaled hard for carrier networks — the blurriest path an image can takeSwitch the conversation to RCS where supported, or send by email or cloud link
iMessageFull quality by default between Apple devices; an optional Low Quality Mode downscales when onCheck Settings > Messages and leave Low Quality Mode off
WhatsAppStandard photo sends are compressed; document attachments are notAttach the photo as a document instead of a photo
Social apps and DMsUploads are re-encoded to platform defaults, whatever the original wasShare a cloud link to the original instead of uploading a copy

App behaviour changes over time, so treat this as a map, not a verdict — the fix column stays right even when the defaults shift.

iPhone vs Android: why cross-platform looks worse

Between two Apple devices, iMessage carries photos over data at close to full quality — unless Low Quality Mode is switched on in Settings > Messages.

The trouble starts across ecosystems. An iPhone texting an Android falls back to SMS/MMS for media, and the carrier channel downscales photos severely — this is the single most common reason a sharp photo arrives as mush. RCS is replacing that path: it carries media over data with far better quality, and support on both iOS and Android has expanded through recent versions. Whether it is active depends on carrier and region support on both sides, so check whether the conversation shows an upgrade prompt in your messaging app.

On Android, Google Messages shows whether RCS is on for a conversation — when it is, received photos hold up dramatically better than the MMS fallback.

How to send pictures without losing quality

  • Send as a document, not a photo. WhatsApp’s document attachment (and the equivalent option in other apps) transmits the file without the photo compression path. The recipient taps to view, and sees the original bytes.
  • Email or a cloud link. For anything that matters — listings, documents, print candidates — an email attachment or a shared album link carries the original untouched.
  • Use nearby transfer when you can. AirDrop between Apple devices and Quick Share between Android devices send the full file directly, with no server in the middle re-encoding it.
  • Turn on RCS where both sides support it, and check that iMessage’s Low Quality Mode is off.
  • Send the original, once. Forwarding a photo that already passed through three chats sends the sum of all that compression. Go back to the source file.

The picture already arrived blurry — now what

First, ask the sender for the original by document attachment, email or cloud link. That always beats any repair, because the sharp version exists on their device.

When the original is gone and the blurry copy is all there is, AI reconstruction is the remaining option — and it works better than most people expect on recompressed photos, because much of the structure survives. Work from the received file itself (save it — do not screenshot it), and:

  2. Upload the saved file. JPG, PNG or WEBP, up to 10 MB. Crop to the region that matters first.
  3. Pick a mode. Quick returns 4MP for 1 credit; Standard and HD return 8MP for 2 credits, with HD adding the strongest reconstruction from the Pro plan.
  4. Compare and download. Most jobs finish in under a minute, and failed jobs do not use credits.

Drag the divider: the smeared half is what heavy compression leaves behind, the sharp half is the model’s reconstruction of the same photo.

Expectations, honestly: photos that were merely recompressed improve the most. Tiny thumbnails and images that were blurry before sending improve less — the model can only estimate from detail that still exists.

Frequently asked questions

Why are iPhone pictures blurry when sent to an Android phone?

Between different ecosystems, messages often fall back to SMS/MMS, which downscales photos hard for carrier networks. Where both sides support RCS, quality is far better — availability has improved on recent iOS and Android versions, but it still depends on carrier and region support.

Does turning on RCS fix blurry pictures?

Where both devices and carriers support it, RCS carries images over data instead of the old carrier channel, so received photos keep much more quality. It is the single most effective in-app setting for cross-platform texting, but coverage is not universal yet.

Can a picture that arrived blurry be fixed?

Often, yes — start from the file you received (not a screenshot of it) and run it through AI reconstruction. Photos that were merely recompressed improve more than tiny thumbnails, because more structure survives for the model to estimate from.

Does WhatsApp always compress photos?

Standard photo sends are compressed at the time of writing; attaching the image as a document bypasses that path, which is why document-sent photos arrive noticeably sharper. App behaviour changes over time, so test with a picture you know well.

Why is a screenshot of a blurry picture even worse?

A screenshot re-captures an already-compressed image at your screen's resolution, discarding another layer of detail. Always save or forward the original file — never re-shoot it from the chat window.
